Canada Announces Delay In 2020 Parents And Grandparents Immigration Program Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

Canada is delaying the opening of their 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program due to the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government to stop the fast-spreading coronavirus in the country.

The launch of the call for expressions of interest to apply for the popular program was anticipated due to the high numbers of cases in the country.

According to the IRCC (Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada), the temporary halt of the call for applications will not impact when the parents and grandparents will arrive in the country.

The IRCC will still process the applications for the parents and grandparents immigration program.
Parents and Grandparents Program allows Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents into Canada and obtain the permanent residency status in the country.

Due to the high the demand of the program, the federal government of Canada has sought various ways over the past decade to manage its intake since the year 2011.

In 2019, around 100,000 Canadians showed interest in sponsoring their parents or grandparents through the Parents and Grandparents Program, however only 21,000 permanent residency spots were available through the program.

Under the Parents and Grandparents Program, 21,000 immigrants are allowed for admissions.
Parents and Grandparents Program has tried a number of approaches to manage the program in recent years and is continuously making changes in the program.

Under its changes, the IRCC has included a first come first serve model, where applications will be processed in the order in which they were submitted.

It has also tried a lottery model, whereby sponsors were randomly selected.
